CDC Science Brief: Masks

Know which Masks Provide the
Best Protection Against COVID-19:

  • Fabric mask with at least 2 to 3 cloth layers.

  • Double mask          (surgical + cloth)

  • Fitted medical mask (surgical mask)

  • N95 (also best for wildfire smoke)

  • KN95

  • KF94

The boxes above provide a general guide.  Choose the face covering that's right for you based on risk, desired level of protection, and personal preference.

  • Masks should completely cover the nose and mouth and fit snugly against the sides of face without gaps.

  • It is especially important to wear a mask when you are indoors with people you do not live with and              when you are unable to stay at least 6 feet apart since COVID-19 spreads mainly among people                   who are in close contact with one another.

DO NOT combine two disposable masks.

Disposable masks are not designed to fit tightly and wearing more than one will not improve fit.

DO NOT use a KN95 with any other mask.

Only use one KN95 mask at a time.
